Beginning October 2004
all ZIMO decoder can be updated with the latest software by the end user !

from miniature ...            . . .  to large scale

Several new features that will be implemented in the near future demand such a solution. Features like: bi-directional communication for different applications, extending the NMRA's function mapping, user friendly loco fine-tuning are just a few samples of what is to come. With so many new features, a decoder bought today may be obsolete very quickly.

To be able to update decoders by the end user (installing the latest software) will therefore become a central theme in the near future for the operator of a DCC system.

Updating ZIMO command stations in this manner has been possible for several years already and the same goes for the cab with the introduction of the MX21 last year. ZIMO decoders could also be updated but had to be sent to the manufacturer, which of course adds cost and inconvenience to the consumer.

Starting in October 2004, ZIMO decoders can be updated by the end user, without opening up the locomotive but rather on the programming track, fast and free of charge! Of course, customers without access to the Internet can get this service performed by a ZIMO distributor.

All that is required is a PC with a serial port (and of course access to the Internet for downloading the latest software) and the ZIMO decoder update module MXDECUP.

Currently sold decoders (for locos: MX62, MX63, MX64, MX64H, MX64V, MX69, and for accessories - MX82) will all be adapted for software download.  Furthermore, almost all decoders sold in 2003/2004 can be adapted but have to be sent to ZIMO for a one-time upgrade.  ZIMO will offer this one-time upgrade for a very reasonable fee.

ZIMO decoders have been built for years with higher capacities than absolutely necessary at the time, for example: Hardware for the (still not fully specified) bi-directional communication, a dual input DCC-Chip with a storage capacity that is still 40% unused (as of July 04).  Because of all these reserves we can now add above features without forcing the user to buy new decoders and it can be done fast and easy.
